Anthology line-up update

Well it’s November 30th, and the rejections and acceptances from the second round are starting to go out. I’ve sent emails to a lot of you, and might take a day or two past this stated deadline to contact everyone.

If you haven’t gotten an email from me today, you should get one by Monday, December 5 at the very latest. I know it’s been nearly a year for some of you, and I appreciate that you’ve waited this long for a response from us.

If you do not get an email, either yea or nay, by Monday, December 6 please don’t hesitate to email submissions(at)doctorfantastiques.com to ask for an update. I’m trying very carefully to not miss anyone, but I’m very much not perfect.

Check this space for the final anthology line-up soon though!

Prose Steampunk Shakespeare Shortlist

All the rejections are at last sent out after a four month wait by all you fabulously patient writers. My sincerest thank you goes out to everyone who’s stuck with the submissions process as various events beyond my control meant rejections and acceptances, etc didn’t go out in a timely fashion.

The very last set of rejection emails went out today, November 4, so if you didn’t get one then you’re still under consideration. In case you’re wondering, the stories that made it to the Second Round are as follows:

  • A Midsummer Night’s Steam by Scott Farrell
  • The Fall of Junius Kaiser by Peter Francis
  • Mechanicals In The Midsummer Wood by Dennis M. Lane
  • The Malefaction of Tybalt’s Mechanical Armature by Tim Kane
  • The Misfiring Love Piston of Sir John Autumnrod by Larry C. Kay
  • Julius C-ZR by Bret Jones
  • Titus Androidicus by Catriona
  • Richard 3.1 by Catriona
  • Othello Prince of the Deep by Sarah Hans
  • Henry the Eight-legged by Howard Mosely-Chalk
  • Fatal Engine by Hannah Kate
  • Richard, Dismantled by Jess Hyslop
  • What You Fuel by Jaymee Goh
  • Her Infinite Variety by K.V. Finn
  • Measure for Steel-Sprung Measure by Rebecca Fraimow
  • The Tumultuous Courtship of Katherine The Shrew To Petruchio The Pirate King
  • A Clockwork Heart or The Measure of a Man by Ashley Reed
  • Much Ado About Steam Presses by Ruth Booth
  • Landship Engine by Claudia Alexander
  • The Vintner’s Tale by Claudia Alexander
  • The Rather Tragic Tale of King Lear’s Machinas by Jennifer Castello
  • The Adventures of Lord Percival Pericles by Christina Scott Sayer Grey
  • Cleopatra’s Artificer by Beth Birdsall
  • The Rebel Engine by Natasha Simonova

Now, I have to mention that just because you’ve hit the Shortlist does not mean you’re getting into the Anthology. We only have space for 8 stories, and will be sending out acceptances and rejections for the second round by the end of November. This time I promise that deadline will actually be met.

First Fiction Read-Through is Done!

Hell and lujah, I am pleased to announce that we finally have a short-list out of all the fiction submissions! Rejections will go out by next week, and if you receive one, thank you very much for your submission, and please try again in the future! We may yet have another Steampunk Shakespeare anthology, depending on how things go at Doc Fantastique Books.

If you don’t hear from us, it’s probably because Matt and I are arguing behind the scenes on whether we really want it discussing editorial decisions on improving your submission to fit what we expect of the anthology. These arguments discussions will culminate in an email telling you what we would like to see improved.

Sonneteers, however, will have to wait a little bit longer. Not much longer–give us two weeks! One day we’ll get paid for these gigs and writers won’t have to wait so long…

In the meantime, have some confetti on the house!

The Long Summer’s Silence

Greeting, all four of you who are still with us!

Rest assured this project is still on, despite the insistence of Real Life™ to interrupt the process.

I guess we should explain a bit of the process, which will hopefully explain why it’s taken so long:

There were three editors, as you recall: myself, Matt Delman, and Lia Keyes. Each submission needs to have the say from two editors. We say either Yes, No, or Maybe.

No from two editors means a rejection.

No from one editor, with no input from one more, means a wait for another editor.

Maybe from one editor and a No from the other editor makes for another process of decision-making.

Maybe from two editors means a third editor has to be the tie-breaker.

Maybe from one editor, and Yes from another, hikes it up higher on the list of acceptance priorities.

And then there are two stories which have a Yes from two editors.

Because we are down to two editors, this process has become a lot slower, so rejections are not going out as fast as they could be. And then there is Real Life™.

Matt and I really appreciate your patience with us (and you have every reason to get mad at us for the radio silence), and we apologize for the delay in working on this project.

If you would like to withdraw to submit elsewhere, feel free to email us and let us know.

Again, sorry.

Viagra is the most famous ‘love pill’ in the world, but it is not the only option for you. The majority of men who tried both brand and generic pills state that Cialis (the most famous and top-quality generic drug) works better. It is up to you to decide whether you choose brand pills or buy Cialis, but ED patients state that:
Now it is possible to avoid awkward publicity if you buy Cialis online in our reliable web pharmacy. To purchase Cialis online simply place your order, use your credit card to pay for your pills, click receive your drug per post in a decent package and start your way to perfect men’s health!

Lia Keyes Leaves the Editorial Team

After much hand-wringing I have decided to bow out of my much-loved co-editorial position on the Steampunk Shakespeare team to concentrate on finishing my book.

The anthology is in such good hands with Matt Delman and Jaymee Goh that I doubt you’ll even notice the difference, and I’ll return to help promote the anthology when it is ready.

Until then…

A List of Unadapted Shakespeare Plays and an Extended Deadline!

A very big thank you to all the writers who have submitted stories so far. Lia, Jaymee, and I are very much enjoying the products of your fertile imaginations!

However, we’ve noticed that some plays are garnering more attention than others. I’ve no idea why this is, but we’ve received a plethora of stories within a narrow range of plays and we’d like to see more variety. So without further ado I give you the following list of plays that have not yet been adapted into short stories:

All’s Well That Ends Well
As You Like It
Love’s Labours Lost
Measure for Measure
Merchant of Venice
Merry Wives of Windsor
Much Ado About Nothing
Twelfth Night
Two Gentlemen of Verona
Cymbeline
Henry VI, Part I
Henry VI, Part II
Henry VI, Part III
Henry VIII
King John
Richard II
Antony and Cleopatra
Coriolanus
King Lear
Othello
Timon of Athens

Also, another announcement — we’re extending the submissions deadline by one month to 12 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time on 30 June 2011.

However, this doesn’t mean the folks who submitted before the original deadline of 31 May will get left in the lurch as to whether their story has been accepted or not. We’ll be posting a Short List of stories received prior to 31 May after that date.

Rapiers and Elizabethan Street Fighting

Romeo and Juliet wasn’t just a love story. It was also a commentary on the violence of Italian passions and way of life. Watch this enlightening video from The Folgers Library YouTube Channel:
